The British Rhythm and Blues Boom of 1962, took inspiration directly from the Black American blues singers of America, used amplified guitars, pounding rhythms from the drums and new singing/performance styles that continue to permeate through the world of rock and pop music today.

In 2012, lets hope for more music across the borough and beyond!

Could this be an early line up of Reg Dwight’s (Elton John’s) Bluesology or even, Van Morrison at The Ealing Club?

Possibly not, but nobody knows who this mystery band is at the moment! There’s a challenge! Somebody must recognise them.

If you know anybody that visited the Ealing club or other venues in the area, we would love to hear their memories and see photos/scans of memorabilia.

More memories and photographs of bands/fans at the Ealing Club will help others to remember, exactly why the “British Rhythm and Blues Boom” of 1962 took place. They will build up a complete picture of a music scene, whose influence still spans the world of music today.

Ronnie Wood's Biography

Ronnie Wood is of course a Rolling Stone, joining the band in the 1970′s. Prior to that, he was playing with The Faces, the Jeff Beck Group (who played at the Feathers pub, Ealing Broadway) and with The Birds.

He is one of the musicians to emerge from Ealing Art School, just after Pete Townshend and prior to Freddie Mercury. Like many other rock musicians, that would take the “raw” British version of Rhythm and Blues to the world, he and his older brother, Artwood, spent time at the Ealing Club.

Artwood, later became, lead singer of his own band: The Artwoods. According to the biographies, he guided Alexis Korner to the door of the Ealing Club, where Alexis would strike an agreement to start up regular Rhythm and Blues Nights.

This is what Ronnie, has to say about Ealing:

…….”Art (Ronnie’s brother) was singing with Blues Incorporated, Britain’s first R & B group. These were a bunch of white guys who sounded like black guys out of Chicago. It was Art, Alexis Korner on guitar, Dick Heckstall-Smith on sax, Spike Heatley, Jack Bruce on bass and Charlie Watts on drums. They started at the Marquee club on Oxford street in central London, but soon moved to the Ealing Club, which, thanks to them, became the traditional home of British R & B”.

Ronnie’s book does also discuss Cyril Davies, who he cites, as a major influence and a personality admired by most of the participants of the Ealing Club and resulting scene. Ronnie goes onto say:

“The Ealing Club and Blues Incorporated were heavy influences on just about everybody, but especially on Fleetwood Mac, Cream, the Yardbirds, Manfred Mann, John Mayall and the Pretty Things“.

Ali McKenzie the lead singer of Ronnie’s first band, The Birds, kindly helped launch the Ealing Rock/Blues Club at the July 2011, Ealing Fringe, along with Don Craine (Downliner’s Sect). Hopefully, they’ll be back next summer, if not before.

The Ealing Club website sets out to celebrate the heritage of Ealing’s Rock music past, while also encouraging more live music inspired by those early pioneers of British Rhythm and Blues. The Blue Plaque is up, exhibitions are planned and the last Thursday of the month Live Music will return to the Ealing Club venue

Dedicated to promoting, preserving and furthering Ealing’s Blues and Rock Heritage.

In July 2011, live music returned to one of Ealing’s legendary venues, “The Ealing Club” (or Ealing Jazz Club). It was here where the “British Rhythm and Blues Boom” of the 1960′s kicked off, when it hosted the first rehearsals of Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated in 1961. On 17 March 1962, (St. Patrick’s Day night) Blues Incorporated began regular blues nights at the club initiating a new music scene, in front of a young crowd, hungry for new sounds.

Blues Incorporated were the first British Musicians who played amplified blues guitar and they were witnessed by the leading lights, of the first generation of British Rock Musicians. “Blues Rock” began here, in Ealing.

The “British Rhythm and Blues Boom” would reverberate across London and eventually reach the U.S through bands and performers who “cut their teeth” at the venue. These would include particularly, the Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann and the Who, but there were many others.
